Chatswood is built for a full day. Two of Sydney's biggest malls sit either side of the railway, one of the city's great Asian food scenes runs the length of Victoria Avenue, and the Metro drops you right in the middle of it — roughly thirteen minutes from the CBD. You can shop, eat your way around three continents, catch a show and still be home for an early night. Here's how a local strings it all together, hour by hour.
8:30am — Brunch on Victoria Avenue
Start where the morning is unhurried. Flower Child does a generous, all-day brunch with a leafy fit-out that feels a world away from the malls a block over — think big bowls, good eggs and proper coffee. If it's full (and on weekends it will be), Allure Cafe & Co. is the reliable back-up, a friendly local spot for a flat white and something off the menu before the day kicks off. The secret to Chatswood is that you barely have to move the car. Brunch, two malls, a food hall, a theatre and dinner are all within a few blocks of the same train platform.
10:00am — A wander through Westfield and Chatswood Chase
Coffee in hand, point yourself at the shops. Westfield Chatswood is the big one — 300-plus stores, the department stores, a cinema and a food level that floats right over the Metro. Cross the road and Chatswood Chase is the upmarket counterpoint: freshly redeveloped, heavy on premium fashion, beauty and a smarter dining line-up. The two sit barely a minute apart, so the move is to graze both — browse the Chase for something nice, do the practical bits at Westfield. 12:30pm — Lunch in an Asian food hall
Now for the best part of the day. Chatswood's Asian food halls are the stuff of legend, and lunch is when they hum. The Mandarin Centre food court is the old favourite — hawker-style Chinese and Malaysian, hand-pulled noodles, claypot rice and queues that move fast. For something newer and slicker, the Chatswood Interchange food hall above the station does ramen, hot pot, Korean and Taiwanese under one roof. 2:30pm — The Concourse, the library, or a walk in the bush
Time to let lunch settle. If you want culture, The Concourse on Victoria Avenue is the civic heart of Chatswood — a concert hall, a theatre and the excellent Chatswood Library, all wrapped around a big open plaza that's great for a coffee and a sit. Check what's on; there's often a matinee, an exhibition or a free event. 6:30pm — Dinner: Korean BBQ or Din Tai Fung
Chatswood does dinner two great ways. For a hands-on, smoky feast, head to one of the Korean BBQ houses clustered on and around Help Street — grill your own at the table, order too many side dishes, and settle in. For something more refined, Din Tai Fung is the dumpling benchmark: the xiao long bao arrive in their little steamer baskets, perfectly pleated, and they alone are worth the trip. 8:30pm — Bubble tea or a Meet Fresh dessert
Finish the way Chatswood does — sweet. The strip is wall-to-wall bubble tea, so grab a brown-sugar milk tea for the walk, or sit down at Meet Fresh for a bowl of warm taro, grass jelly and shaved ice that's somewhere between dessert and a hug. It's the perfect, low-key last stop before the short walk back to the Metro.
